Biggest Surprise
My biggest surprise actually just happened. It was definitely a combination of Tuesdays and Wednesdays workouts. After being injured for a little over a month, doing the circuit in the morning felt like heaven to me. I never could have imagined actually enjoying the burning of my lungs and my shaky legs, but that workout proved me wrong! I was so glad to be back, and to be back without pain! The whole workout on Tuesday I told myself to enjoy every minute because I knew that most likely I wouldn't make it through the whole thing. I was blessed to enjoy all 25 minutes of the workout, plus a great cool down! Wednesday was also a huge surprise. Before the run, I realized how ironic it was that I still couldn't run my hardest. If it wasn't a foot injury, it had to be an annoying heart rate monitor. But again, I was blessed and made it through the whole workout without any issues (aka, a harmful electrical shock!) It just feels so good to be back, to feel really like part of the team again. I couldn't have asked for a better last 2 days!Marly
It all started on a bitter day where the snow was beginning to disappear into slates of ice across the fields and sidewalks. We had a group of six and we set off, with the facemasks hiding our identities, onto our most intense workout of the week...the hills workout. We proceeded through the first two sets of hills in a nice little pack, everyone pushing and helping each other out. Then, it was onto the last set...dun dun dun..HUFFMAN! So, we began our route back towards Columbia St. when Jenn and I decided to take our little group on the secret passage that many have dreamed of seeing. We tempoed up and over the railroad tracks; ducking down when sensing signs of movement from railroad security. Sliding all over the icy rocks, we were scared of getting hurt...but then this fear of injury soon turned into fear of getting caught as a man started chasing us, yelling at us to get off the railroad tracks. We began sprinting at this point, trying the slide down the rock-covered hill as fast as we could, but then Jamie went down getting caught on a branch. Trying to free her from the clasping branch we soon realized it was going to be virtually impossible. Emily with wide eyes filled with terror told us we had to continue on with the workout becuase that was the most important thing number one...and it was too late to save Jamie, we were going to have to escape the man before getting caught. So, of course we all took a vote and sided with Emily. We finished up the third part of the workout as we soon arrived at Huffman, out of breath and still slightly worried about Jamie who we left near the tracks. As we began running Huffman hills, nearing the top of the hill we saw a man running towards us...we culdn't believe our eyes IT WAS THE MAN!!! "oh no!" we thought...so we finished up the workout with an incredibly fast last part of the workout, but amazingly we all seemed under control for the circumstances....Jamie made it home and was enjoying some hot chocolate by the time we got a hold of her. Overall, it was a great run!
......ok ok, so this didn't really happen, but the hill workout is the basis of my real story..
One morning the temperature was -5 degrees with a windchill bringing it down to a blistering -25 degrees. What better to do on a morning like this, but attack a grueling hill workout for the ages. While many were still asleep, snuggling in their warm blankets, in their heated houses, three brave souls took to the roads. Jenn and I joined you promptly at 5:30 am (maybe even earlier) to meet for the workout. It was Jenn's first time (I think) doing the workout and was dressed cautiously...wearing reflective wear, many many layers, and a blinking light..yes that's right a blinking light! When we started off on the run, we decided to deceive Jenn by sprinting in the beginning, trying to scare the first-timer a little bit. The prank worked, but then we really got into the run and we were enjoying the fresh snow on the ground. We reached Arrowhead to find inches upon inches of snow on the hill that we would be expected to do high knees and bounding up. After five minutes of pretty funny-looking attempts at bounding up Arrowhead through the snow, we left to head to Seger. It was this point when challenging the newcomer, Jenn, was put into action again. For a large stretch of Columbia we had Jenn try to hold us off as we added in surges along the stretch. Jenn excelled with flying colors as she successfully completed her mission. Then, we reached Seger Park where we would be working on downhills. At this point, amazingly we were getting WARM!! yes, warm even though there's blistering cold around us. At Seger, we discovered that Jenn plus downhill equals stay out of the way! Can you say beast? I don't think I have ever seen someone master a downhill like Jenn did, she was like a gazalle just gliding on down. It was after Seger, that sadly Jenn had to part from us due to a meeting, but the workout we had completed before she left surely was one of the best workouts I have ever personally experienced. The rush the cold air gave us and getting to be able to see Jenn challenge herself by pioneering the workout with us was such a great time. So, basically this run stood out for the reason of the weather conditions being soo intense and it was such a lucky opportunity to get to have fun with Jenn as she did so well and put up with our evil tricks. At the end of the run we took pictures in the "frozen tundra" and took a picture of an icicle hanging from your ear. This is a workout that I will never forget and I hope Jenn doesn't either...I guess thanks to you we do have pictures to help with this. Michelle
"It could have happened my second week of practice, or after my third day of working out with the team. But It didn't. My first day of practice in a new sport, and as we run strides, someone says, "Good job, Hannah." At first I was a bit shocked. But then another girl ran past with words of encouragement. All I could think was: Geez, I must really look like I'm dying. And then I noticed it. All the girls seemed to be cheering each other on, exchanging verbal 'high-fives' as they passed one another. And it wasn't just the girls that were already friends. Upperclassmen, underclassmen; state-level runners and just-for-fun runners; captains and newbies seemed to share words of encouragement throughout the practice. I was amazed by the support and upbeat atmosphere. It was a team comraderie like I have never experienced. And it is a privilege to be able to step onto this team, and be accepted as though I had always been a part of it."
That was my biggest surprise -- how nice the girls on the team are. Track is largely an individual sport, but if I didn't know that, I would never have thought so. Hannah Janvrin '09

My biggest suprise this season was the double practices that I did. I had done doubles before, but only biking after a run or something. Nothing as intense as those morning runs could get sometimes. Maybe it wasn't much but to me it was! Taylor
My biggest surprise this season was running this past monday when it was really cold and icy and running really hard! I finally felt fast and relaxed even though I fell 4 times and took Jenn down with me! We did an extra 10 minutes too because we kept falling and almost got run over (on the sidewalk) by a cart/truck thing. =) Jenny Harris
Michelle, Mr. Hoff and I ran a 85 minute hard hill workout at 5:30 on a thursday morning in -25 degree weather. By the end of the run, my hands were ghostly white from lack of circulation. While the rest of my body was red, wind-scorn and numb, my colorless hands burned in pain. I stuck my hands in my pants, rubbed my hands together like two sticks starting a fire. I put them under a air drier and even a burning hot shower but nothing seemed to work. Then as I remember I had a big timed writing for AP Language 1st period, I began to freak out. Michelle and I were even considering getting a pass from Hoff so I wouldn't have to do it because I couldn't even move my fingers. My fingers soon defrosted though and all was good, GREAT actually. That morning became one of my best running memories because I had accomplished so much, helping to boost my confidence in my running abilities. When I stand on the starting line of a race now, I can always think back to this workout and know that I have the potental to run amazing races... and as that gun goes off, I just let myself fly! Jen
This season my biggest surprise was at our first meet. Ever since last year when I had my stress fracture I had not felt fast. After watching Kayla run an AMAZING mile I was inspired and with the help of Elle and Michelle I felt fast for the very first time since I have been back running.
Well, since I remembered to e-mail you with my story, I decided to pick a funny one. Emily
Michelle, Elle, Kayla, Kate, and I were doing a long run by the river walk on a very slippery and icy day. Michelle was leading the pack and called out that there was a large ice patch up ahead. We were all being very cautious until Michelle totally wiped out, causing me to trip over her. Kayla then dove onto the grass to avoid the ice, while Elle and Kate came sliding towards us. To add to this hilarious event, a car drove by at the same time as we all fell and beeped few times. So once we stopped laughing, we got up and ran down the block a little more. When we came to the riverwalk sidewalk, a man was standing there against the fence and said, "Did you guys fall too?" It was a very eventful run. Jamie
The workout at Four Lakes last week was fun, especially because it was dark, very cold, and there was a big hill to run up. What more could a person want? And I'm not being sarcastic. The last hill was the best when everyone chased me up. I haven't run that hard in so long. I'll probably never forget the feeling in my legs and my lungs at that moment coming up toward the top. My biggest oh wow moment this season was when I learned the power ofmusic during a workout after school one day. Emily Grissom had lent meher ipod with a great variety of music, and the music was just likehearing my teammates around me and cheering me on as if I were runningwith all of you. I absolutely loved the feeling of strength andmotivation it gave me and totally remembered why I love the team evenmore. Manda Phadke

February 13th
Did you ever see a poster that stated in bold words Persistence? The persistence poster I saw had a serene shot of some picture of a National Park. I think it means that if you show persistence you may end up in a better place. I saw a poster with the large words commitment with Tiger golfing in the rain? Usually I saw these posters hanging in stuffy places like doctor offices and places like that. Funny stuff don’t you think? These types of posters remind us of the end. What’s wrong with images that show what we do to appreciate the end?

Running in the ice and snow, running in –degree weather totally bundled up (Jen Prazak), running up hills at 5:45 a.m. in the morning. Persistence is doing this each week. Running without letting the crazy weather forecasts stop you. You are right in the middle of a very special season. There’s no turning back. The break through is beginning to happen, I saw it Monday and again on Tuesday morning. Tuesday’s circuit was designed to be very hard and yet many of you ran well. I saw some of you push to run with people you haven’t run with before. Push to run harder, your performances at the meet on Saturday show me you could run faster in practice. However, don’t run without good form. Thankfully, Coach Iverson spent some time showing what poor form does to your running. You are practicing this form daily. If you think about good form while you train you will be better in races. Please run relaxed and enjoy the process. Finally, as a group you have very good attitudes about the different challenges we have faced. I want to say that I’m very proud of you for this. I don’t expect any changes with regards to the weather for at least another month - - - so my attitude is bring it on.
Schedule for upcoming days are as follows:
Thursday Challenging but very satisfying hill workout. Start afternoon workout in Driver’s Ed. room for meeting.
Friday 30 minutes easy run. Meeting 5:45 a.m. in contest gym.
Saturday 1 hour run with no planned practice with coaches.
Monday 1:15 morning run with Iverson. Time TBA soon.
Tuesday Circuit. Meeting 5:45 a.m. slight change hoping to have yoga before working. We really need yoga.

February 4th
WOW! What a start to this track season. All I have to say to Mother Nature is bring it on. It was an incredible week of training as everyone practiced a little patience to get through the elements. On Tuesday I ran in shorts as the temperature hit 50, only 12 hours later my son almost blew across a parking lot. The temperature was 0 and wind chill easily -20. At the end of the run on Thursday the snow felt horrible. It took the Hoff family 3 hours to get home. On Friday after 10 inches of snow fell and school was cancelled the snow continued and 30 girls managed to get a workout in at 6 a.m.
I wanted to e-mail specifically about Saturday’s practice. I heard from a few girls who didn’t attend, but not everyone. This will always be a basic requirement for Coach Iverson and I for Saturday practices. We both would like an e-mail informing us of where you are. It’s hard for us not to be worried especially considering the weather, if this e-mail could come on Friday even better.
This Monday morning we had a good practice. We’ve received pleasant surprises with regard to the weather. The temperature actually felt warm and fresh snow was pretty. The rest of the week will go as follows:
Tuesday morning we will meet to run a circuit. The workout allows for a little over 20 minutes of overall running. Wednesday is late-arrival, we will still meet at 5:45 a.m. Earlier is better. We will run a 60 minute run. We will finish the run at Mill Street, please find door 18 which is my classroom door. The plan will be to work on goal stuff you could hang in your locker room. If everything works well you should arrive at 7:00 and have 50 minutes to use any art supplies to create cool stuff. If you want to bring food please bring it to North and I’ll drive it over. This has the potential to be a really valuable experience for you. I’m hoping to get to know you a little better. We could also talk about the upcoming meet and what you would like to run. On Thursday will have a full team meeting in the Driver’s Ed room, shortly after we will room the hill workout. Friday an easy 30 minute run and Saturday the meet.
I hoping this will be an incredibly hard week of training. Some of you are worried about this. Don’t be. Surprise yourself and make this your best week of training.

January 20th
Hi ladies!
It's finally time! I'm more excited than a barrel full of monkies!
This will be the last email I send to this particular list of people. If you aren't on the official list I'll get from Mrs. K on Tuesday, you head for the recycle bin, so don't get recycled. I send emails to all sprinters at least every Sunday to fill you in on the coming week and go over things from the previous week, so it's important that you check your mail.
Tuesday we meet outside the concession area. Don't get impatient. It takes a little time to get everybody in uniforms, sweats, and lockers. Then Wednesday morning we start at 5:45 sharp in the field house. Ordinarily on Tuesdays and Thursdays we meet in the driver ed room at 3:30, but this Thursday we need to meet in Ms M's Health room instead. Friday morning back in the field house, and then Saturday morning at 8:00 in the driver ed room.
Wednesday we'll go over the warmup and do starts, Thursday Ms M will talk about nutrition and then we'll head to the weight room, so we won't be going outside. Friday will be learning more drills and relay exchanges, and Saturday will be more drills and weights. So this will be more of a learning week, and the actual workouts will start next week.
If you still haven't decided if you're coming out for track or not, decide today. The only way anyone can come out late is if they're out for another sport right now.
I hope all of you are half as excited about the season starting as the coaches are. This will really be fun!!!

Baby, it's COLD outside!
Temperatures are supposed to be very, very cold this weekend -- especially on Saturday. The high on Saturday is supposed to be 5 degrees with very cold wind chills. I know several of you have made plans to do your long run today, but for those of you set to do yours tomorrow, here are a few suggestions...
1. Run on a treadmill (or combine cross-training) if you have access.
2. Bundle WAY up and do part of it outside (run into the wind first) and then finish inside.
3. Switch your long run to Sunday or Monday. It will still be cold, but not so dangerous. Still, bundle up and run into the wind first, but you could make it that day!
4. No matter what you choose, GET IN YOUR RUN! Weather like this is certainly a challenge, but CHAMPIONS find a way to meet it! Whatever you do, take care of yourself!

Remember, track materials are due in the Athletic Office now. We will meet Tuesday after school to hand out lockers, uniforms and sweats.
Practices for distance runners in track will begin at the end of the following week.
Sweatshirts have been ordered and will be in soon!
For those of you not doing track, see Mr. Iverson in the next two weeks for a new schedule that will take you into the Spring!

Below is a 9-minute interview with Anna Willard, who was the NCAA Division I national champion in the 3000m steeplechase last year. She then made it to the World Championships last year in Osaka, Japan and hopes to qualify for the Beijing Olympics this year. Watch and listen for how she hopes to train and what she thinks it will take to win a medal in the Olympics (she wants to run 9:20 or better for just under two miles over hurdles -- wow!). Plus, she's just an interesting person!

January 17th
The IHSA has collected votes from principals throughout the state. They have decided to go to a three class system for track and field. To my knowledge the changes will not take place this year. The take a closer look at the vote please click:

All girls who have participated in morning runs the past several Mondays, please consider running Tuesday morning instead. We do not have school so I do not plan to run next Monday, but Tuesday, January 22nd will work. WE ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO COME! I plan to extend the run to 50 minutes to fit your winter schedules. Also note worthy...Michelle and Jan Prazak ran the hill workout. The workout was fun. We finished the entire workout in a time of 1:12. The total number of hills run was 12. The nice part was beating the snow. If you are interested please don't hesistate to come out. We do start at 5:30 a.m. Hope to see you there.

All girls who have participated in morning runs the past several Mondays, please consider running Tuesday morning instead. We do not have school so I do not plan to run next Monday, but Tuesday, January 22nd will work. WE ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO COME! I plan to extend the run to 50 minutes to fit your winter schedules. Also note worthy...Michelle and Jan Prazak ran the hill workout. The workout was fun. We finished the entire workout in a time of 1:12. The total number of hills run was 12. The nice part was beating the snow. If you are interested please don't hesistate to come out. We do start at 5:30 a.m. Hope to see you there.

Next week is very important to us. We would like to have all your stuff in by Friday. As a result, you will to receive your stuff and we will allow you to compete. So far I have 3 signed contracts. This would be a very small team, a girl for every 6 events. To make this perfectly clear, if you are interested in track please turn-in your money, athletic permission form, and your signed contract to Mrs. Kavanagh. The website is a great resource to use for this www.nnhsgirlstrack.com. Mrs. Kavanagh will put the contracts in my mailbox. On Tuesday I will have a list of all things turned in. From that list the coaches/captains will hand out equipment. AT 3:30 P.M. WE WILL START NEAR THE CONCESSION STAND WINDOW. LOOK FOR US. You will end the process receiving a lock and locker. You should be done by 4:15 p.m.
Also expect to be informed as to when your season starts. One last thing, to all interested in the Disney Trip all money is due on Tuesday, Jan 22nd.

I want to check and see that the new email addresses I got all work. If you weren't at the meeting today, be sure to check the calendar on the website. Sweats and uniforms will be handed out on the 22nd, so you need to be there. We don't want to take practice time to hand those things out. Our first practice is the 23rd, bright and early. If you are out for a winter sport right now, ignore all of this and we'll see you when your season ends. Everybody needs to get new shoes, and again, please go to Naperville Running Company or Dick Pond's.
If you've decided not to come out for track this year, please let me know so I can take you off of this list.

Are you locked in for this year?
What are your targets this year? PR's? A medal? A trophy? Making varsity? Top Seven? Medal at State? State Champions?
No matter what you want to achieve, you must be locked in on your targets NOW if you are to get there in May or in November this year. Are you focused?
No excuses. If you've been dedicated (and I know from many of your responses that most of you have been), then you're doing your part. If you've been slacking a bit, NOW IS THE TIME TO MAKE UP FOR IT! The past cannot be controlled, but today can be. If you made a mistake yesterday, don't make it again today. Learn from them and become better!

Many of you have ordered winter sweatshirts. The money was due today, but I will not place the order until next week, so PLEASE let me know ASAP if I need to order one for you!
Remember that track forms, physicals and money are due after school on Tuesday, January 22nd. Please be down at the Athletic Office right after school to drop stuff off. You can get in your run after you turn everything in. Practices will begin at the end of the next week.
Good job to the Monday morning crew with Mr. Hoff! They burned through their normal 37-minute run in 33 minutes on Monday. Way to go everyone! If anyone is intersted, they meet at 5:45 every Monday. The more, the merrier!
Michelle Stratton pioneered the new track hill workout Thursday with Mr. Hoff. It is a challenging and exciting workout that should produce tremendous results! Rumor has it that Michelle dropped Mr. Hoff on the way back! :) (but then, to make up for it, he did more hills in the afternoon!)
Michelle and Marissa Speckmann are among those who meet with Mr. Racey each Tuesday morning to do an hour of strength, drills and flexibility. They meet at 6:00 for anyone intersted!
Einstein's Runs will continue through the beginning of the Track Season! (Then, we'll do long runs at practice on Saturdays!)
